Spiritual Hygiene 101: A Starter Guide for Protecting Your Energy
It is 2025 and energy has become a normal topic of conversation. What started as a trend a few years ago is truly here to stay (necessarily so). To discuss emotions, crystals, vibes, and ancestors is as normal as asking your friends “how’s work going?”
Lately, many people are calling themselves “spiritual” simply because they own a few crystals or bought their first deck of tarot cards. There is a lot more to this chosen lifestyle. So, how does one maintain their spirituality and incorporate their practices into their everyday rituals without feeling overwhelmed?
The answer is simple—do what feels natural. Do what your grandmothers and mothers used to do. Take those baños. Do a limpiesa in your home. Keep plants at your job. One thing is for sure, this is not one for the faint of heart. But it is well worth the journey and the clarity that will come.
Let’s talk about Spiritual Hygiene:
Keep a clean and clutter-free living space.
Clutter allows low energies to hide and bother us when we sleep. Once in a while, shake things up—change the furniture around. Clean on a normal schedule. Mop your floors, wipe off dust, throw out the trash.
Create and maintain your ancestor altar.
If it were not for those who came before us, we would not be here. Clean it at least once a week. If your grandmother was a clean freak, then you better keep that table clean. She is not going to appreciate visiting a dirty place.
Make time for them.
Sit there at the altar for a few minutes each day. If you cannot dedicate a few minutes each day, then at least once a week sit with them and thank them for your blessings. If you do not make time for them, then why would you expect them to make time for you? Give them offerings that they liked during their living life.
No altar? No problem.
For those who cannot keep an altar up, you can have a traveling altar—your ancestors’ pictures in a special box with keepsakes that belonged to them or represent them.
Mind your words.
If you are working on manifesting your goals and being the Queen that you are—please do not insult yourself. If one slips out, apologize to yourself and reword that last phrase. This is easier said than done. Over time, you will catch yourself and the thought will transform before the words are spoken out loud.
Adorn and protect.
Wear crystals and waistbeads for self-love and communication. Use amulets and plants to protect your spaces.
Turn your bath into a ritual.
Just as we shower every day, at minimum, your shower or bath should be transformed into a spiritual or ritualistic bath (baño) that soothes your soul. Light your candle, say your mantras and prayers, and prepare a baño. You can either prepare one yourself or purchase a bath from a trustworthy Spiritualist. After the normal shower, you will either sit in the bathtub with this special bath or pour it over you. Visualize all that you want to wash away to make space for all the blessings coming your way. This can be done with flowers, herbs, essential oils, and perfumes.
Protect your space and your body.
Lastly, be careful who you allow in your living space and your physical body. After all this work and maintenance, don’t let someone undo your work just because they came in with low vibes and bad intentions — leaving all their darkness inside of you and your home.If you have not started, do not allow people—including yourself—to walk around your home with outside shoes. Let’s keep the outside, OUTSIDE.
For now, this is just a starter list of Spiritual Hygiene. With time, dedication, and consistency, these tips will become as normal as brushing your teeth.
Stay alert and be humble, Beauties.
